COVID -19 LEARNER SUPPORT

WE WILL CONTINUE TO EDUCATE AND SUPPORT OUR CHILDREN, PARENTS AND COMMUNITY TO ENSURE THEIR HEALTH AND SAFETY.

Greetings to ALL learners, parents and guardians of Wavecrest Primary School.

Kindly take time to read the following information :

By now we are all aware of the dangers of the Worldwide Pandemic - Corona virus. We believe that our learners, parents and the community are well-informed about the dangers of this virus. Parents, please make all effort to keep your children inside and ensure that they adhere to regulations of Operation Lock down.

Plan for continuity of learning
As a school, we support continued access to quality education.
This can include:
• Use of online/e-learning strategies
• Assigning reading and exercises for home study
• Radio, podcast or television broadcasts of academic content

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO?
  • Make sure to listen to children’s concerns and answer their questions in an age-appropriate manner; don’t overwhelm them with too much information.
  •  Encourage them to express and communicate their feelings.
  •  Discuss the different reactions they may experience and explain that these are normal reactions to an abnormal situation. • Emphasize that children can do a lot to keep themselves and others safe.
  •  Introduce the concept of social distancing (standing further away from friends, avoiding large crowds, not touching people if you don’t need to, etc.)
  •  Focus on good health behaviours, such as covering coughs and sneezes with the elbow and washing hands.
  •  Help children understand the basic concepts of disease prevention and control.

Use exercises that demonstrate how germs can spread. For example, by putting coloured water in a spray bottle and spraying over a piece of white paper. Observe how far the droplets travel. • Demonstrate why it is important to wash hands for 20 seconds with soap and water - Put a small amount of glitter in students’ hands and have them wash them with just water, notice how much glitter remains, then have them wash for 20 seconds with soap and water.

• Have students analyze texts to identify high risk behaviours and suggest modifying behaviours

FACTS ABOUT COVID-19
What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus. ‘CO’ stands for corona, ‘VI’ for virus, and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as ‘2019 novel coronavirus’ or ‘2019-nCoV.’ The COVID-19 virus is a new virus linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and some types of common cold.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
Symptoms can include fever, cough and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia or breathing difficulties. More rarely, the disease can be fatal. These symptoms are similar to the flu (influenza) or the common cold, which are a lot more common than COVID-19. This is why testing is required to confirm if someone has COVID-19. For more info search (sacoronavirus.co.za).

The principal (Mr.Bougardt) and staff are making all effort to assist and avail learning material through this platform by providing links, websites and learning material for our learners. Please ensure that your child is reading daily.

OUR PROGRAMME

The  YEP programme is more a process than a programme. Learners were identified who are at risk.So who fits the technical definition of 'at risk?' An at-risk youth is a child who is less likely to transition successfully into adulthood. There are also learners who decided themselves to join the programme. We will look at factors that lead to children being identified as at-risk and how those factors can adversely affect successful transition into adulthood.

OUR ULTIMATE GOALS ARE :
1. TO PROVIDE YOUNG PEOPLE.........
  • with the motivation to achieve a healthy and positive adulthood.
  • opportunities to set themselves positive goals.
  • with the tools to help them to become law abiding citizens in their communities and South Africa as a whole.
  • Social skills, good values and attitudes.

2. TO PREVENT
  • Discipline problems in class and at school.
  • Exposure to drugs and drug abuse.
  • Fighting and bullying.
  • Possible high school drop outs.
  • Pregnancy prevention in High School.

3.TO ASSIST :
Children to develop the ability to express themselves confidently and creatively, learn strategic thinking and navigate challenges.

4. WE WANT TO :

Enrich the lives of young people by driving Social Progress & Community Resilience as well as Social Skills.

EMPOWER OUR YOUTH

“Our youth are not failing the system; the system is failing our youth. Ironically, the very youth who are being treated the worst are the young people who are going to lead us out of this nightmare.” — Rachel Jackson

Here are a few reasons why Youth Empowerment is essential- • Poverty eradication: Youth empowerment can help reduce the rate of poverty to a significant level. One of the keys to empowering the youth is with skill development. When a youth is equipped with essential skills, he can utilize them to feed, assist others, and even invest for future use, aiding the nation economically. This will in-turn contribute to the increase in employability and add to the GDP of the nation. • Good education standard: Empowerment can help youth to understand the importance of education that leads to social improvement of the country. When a youth is empowered, he understands the importance of education and helps uplift the sector, integral for a developing nation such as India. Such empowered youth can donate educational facilities to primary, secondary and even to tertiary institutions. Today, India lacks the proper infrastructure for education, which can easily be brought into existence only through empowerment. • Good governance: With the inculcation of youth empowerment, the youth can reject the status quo and pave a path for a better future. Today, the youth is claiming his right to a decent living by willing to take risks, which helps in the development of leadership skills. Starting from Martin Luther King Jr to Justin Trudeau, visionary leaders are noted to have taken risks from a tender age. In other words, to build a better tomorrow, we need to nurture the saplings of today. Hence, a radical government, which is pro-people, comes from harnessing bright minds capable of taking the nation into a brighter future. • Crime reduction: Empowerment ensures that youth has the necessary skill to sustain a livelihood, preventing him to adopt the path of crime. Presently, a lot has been spent in the name of fighting crime without understanding that crime affects the youth in an intrinsic level. It is easy for a young impressionable mind to get waylaid and get entrapped in anti-social activities because he was not empowered morally, academically as well as financially. There are serious social and economic consequences associated with not addressing the youth who is at the risk of negative circumstances – not only for the youth himself and his family, but also for the society at large. Empowerment enables a young mind to differentiate the wrong from the right, denouncing the path of injustice for a respectable living. In today’s day and age, young minds should have access to resources to transform their consciousness through their beliefs, values, and attitudes. Then only can we believe in making our nation “shine”, even in times of adversity. Read more at: https://yourstory.com/mystory/d4c4e32c0d-importance-of-youth-empowerment

Values are defined as the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something; principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life. May these quotes inspire you to live your life based upon your highest values so that you may live your dreams. Here at Wavecrest we decided to focus on 20 values for the year. “When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.” Roy E. Disney
